Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
Beginner - Intermediate Level
This one time class will focus on identifying the main idea and supporting sentences of a variety of genres, including fables, fiction, and non-fiction texts. We will cover several comprehension and response topics including:
-Establishing purpose for reading assigned text
-Create mental images to deepen understanding
-Make inferences and use evidence to support understanding
-Evaluate details to determine key ideas
-Synthesize information to create new understanding
-use text evidence to support appropriate responses
-Write responses that demonstrate understanding of texts across genres

The class will be structured as a combination of lecture, discussions, and activities. I will be using the whiteboard and a word document for this class. My computer monitor will be shared. The learners will see a word document that will display different texts as we read and discuss them. The learners will also see a whiteboard, which we will use to discuss the different ways to create graphic organizers. As we discuss, I will encourage them to take notes while I am doing the same on the whiteboard. Due to the learners interacting through lecture, discussions, and using visual aids, my teaching style tends to be demonstrator.

Learning Goals

Common Core: Reading Standards-For literature and Informational (Grade 7)
1. Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support
analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as
inferences drawn from the text

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree in Education from University of Central Missouri
I have taught my twins and children in public schools a variety of language arts skills. I have taught in multiple states and am aware of the state standards that schools require in different grades. My expertise and bachelor's degree in education qualifies me to teach language arts skills for grades K-6th. My background with homeschooling my twins, who are now doing 7th grade work, and other homeschool students has allowed me to practice reading comprehension and writing skills on a daily basis. Between my professional experience before having children and being the primary teacher for my children since covid, I am well qualified to teach any language arts skills to elementary and middle school aged children.
