📘 What: In this fun superheroes-themed summer camp, we’re going over key Phonics components that are studied in 1st grade: consonant blends and short vowels, silent E and long vowels, digraphs, consonant blends, and segmenting phonemes, and ending blends. We're also learning to write our first sentences. ✂️ How: We’ll start by reviewing the focus words together off of slides; then we’ll go over the first digital Boom cards in the deck together, after which students will work on their own in a different window by opening a Fast Pin, a link on Boom Learning that I’ll make available to learners before each class. Learners will have different challenges in each class: moving the right ice cream (the correct letter pair) to an ice cream truck; moving the right S’more; chasing butterflies; dragging the correct balloon in the water fight. They also need to type in the correct letter pair in a box. Students will then work in groups to build sentences with the focus words and their favorite superheroes. The class concludes with a guided superhero meditation that will help students relax and ground themselves. We will learn 3 meditation techniques and each will be repeated twice for sustained practice. 🐶 For Whom: This class is perfect for advanced kindergarteners, first graders, or second-graders who need to brush up on their phonics skills. Camp breakdown: ➡️ Week 1 (of June 7th) ✅ 1st meeting: consonant blends (e.g. bl, gl, etc) and short vowels 1st part; Spiderman meditation (students will learn to build awareness of breath in the nostrils; notice thoughts, let them go and go back to the breath); ✅ 2nd meeting: consonant blends and short vowels 2nd part; Spiderman meditation ✅ 3rd meeting: silent E and long vowels; Wonderwoman meditation (general focus on thoughts; students will learn to become aware of their thoughts, let them go, and go back to the peace of the blue sky) ➡️ Week 2 (of June 14th) ✅ 1st meeting: digraphs (two letters representing one sound. e.g. ph) Wonderwoman (meditation on the blue sky) ✅ 2nd meeting: consonant blends and segmenting words into phonemes (sounds) Batman meditation (learners will focus on the sound of the gong that I’m going to ring, notice any thoughts, let them go, and go back to the sound) ✅ 3rd meeting: ending blends (nt as in plant, mp as in lamp, etc) Batman meditation; Activities: 💠 1).
