Beginner Level
In this one time class, we will discuss a type of figurative language called similes. First we will have each student introduce themselves and tell their favorite animal. I will use a book read aloud called Quick As A Cricket by Audrey Wood, that will help us brainstorm similes by using animals in nature. We will use group brainstorming to help each other name an animal that matches the given similes in the file. Next we will create an "I AM" poem using similes (file attached). Once their poem is written, we will share them with others to enjoy.
Learning Goals
Students will learn what a simile is and how to use it in their writing to show more detail.

Teacher expertise and credentials
North Carolina Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
I have been teaching figurative language including similes for years. There are a lot of fun activities to do with similes that get the kids thinking and hopefully realize that by adding similes to their writing they are also adding detail. Similes often give us a mental picture of things when we are the reader to help us better understand a text.
