In this science camp that meets three times over one week, young learners will be introduced to the Periodic Table of the Elements. We will be sure to cover all 118 elements (though some will be a very brief mention!) as we learn about the properties of the Periodic Table columns and why the Table is arranged the way it is. Learners will enjoy discovering how elements impact their everyday lives as we discuss elements in the human body, the environment, food and the items we use each day. We will have a hands-on activity each day that we meet. This camp will be a fun introduction to chemistry and learners will be encouraged to participate, brainstorm, and ask a lot of questions! Each day we will discuss different groups of elements. The schedule will be as follows (though it may adjust depending on what learners are most interested in - I am happy to adapt to better match individual interests). Day 1 Introduction to the Periodic Table How the Periodic Table is Arranged Main Group Metals Transition Metals Day 2 Alkali Metals Alkaline Earth Metals Halogens Noble Gases Day 3 Metalloids Non Metals Lanthanides Actinides Review
Learning Goals
Students will receive a general overview and introduction to the Periodic Table of the Elements, and will learn about how elements contribute to our lives. Learners will have fun while gaining a solid introduction to crucial scientific concepts.

Hello Families!
My name is Jennifer and I taught my first class for Outschool in March, 2021. From that first class to the present, I have been so happy to teach such diverse, curious, imaginative, and AMAZING learners! I look forward to working with all of the learners who enroll in my classes.
When I am not teaching on Outschool, I homeschool my four busy children! In our home, we are crazy about science, nature, animals, Pokemon, Minecraft, playing board games and more! My kids also love connecting with other learners in a variety of Outschool classes. I come to homeschooling from a professional teaching background, and I have classroom experience in all elementary grades. Most of my experience came in middle grade math and science, and I love math and science still! I have a Bachelor of Education degree, with qualifications for both elementary and high school, and teachable subjects in math and science. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, with a psychology minor (with a focus on children’s psychology). The last 15 years of my life have been all about teaching - in the classroom, online, and in our homeschool!
As well as classroom teaching, I have tutored math (grades 5- adult), volunteered as a storyteller with the local library, been a Girl Guides Leader, taught Junior Achievement classes, and worked as a nanny and a babysitter. Our family is involved in a homeschool co-op where I have shared in teaching many homeschooled kids.
One of my favourite discoveries about homeschooling has been how exciting it is for ME to learn new things right along with my children! I love to follow my children’s interests, and so over the years I have learned about harbour seals, baseball history, cardboard engineering, bridges, ancient Egypt, ornithology and so much more! You can expect to see a wide range of interests reflected in my Outschool course offerings. I also love to hear suggestions from learners - so let me know your class ideas! I love to learn! And I love to teach others what I have learned!
When I am not homeschooling or teaching here on Outschool, you can probably find me reading! I also enjoy hiking, playing board games, and baking. I am so grateful to get the chance to work with many wonderful families through Outschool and I can’t wait to meet you and share my love of learning!
