In this 5 week class, learners will explore their sewing machines and end up with a pennant banner to hang in their home. [This is a FLEX class, there will be NO LIVE MEETINGS]

Class Experience

In this super beginner machine sewing course, learners will become familiar with their full sized sewing machine, and will complete the construction of a pennant banner.  We will introduce and discuss some of the essential sewing tools, and explore the ways in which they are used.  Learners will be able to thread their machines with confidence, and sew a straight line with ease. We will discuss and explore the topics of basic machine maintenance, the importance of pressing, various ways to cut fabric, and different measurement and marking tools.  Learners will end this class with the basic skills and confidence to begin sewing independently.  
In our first week, we will explore our machines, and become familiar with all of the moving parts and basic machine maintenance and operation.  
In our second week, we will measure, sew, cut, and iron our bias tape, and discuss the importance of the iron in sewing.
In our third week, we will measure, mark and cut our fabric for our pennant pieces and discuss and learn about the different ways to measure, mark and cut for various projects.   
In our fourth week we will sew our pennant pieces and explore the different ways to finish seams for various projects.
In our fifth week we will assemble and sew our pennant banner and complete our projects.    

Videos will be posted on Mondays and learners will share a video or photo of their work.  Learners will participate in in-class polls on fabric choices, and will submit questions and ideas in the classroom.  I will answer specific technique questions with video responses.

Parental Guidance
Learners will use scissors, a sewing machine and needles as well as seam rippers.
Supply List
Learner will need a full sized sewing machine capable of both straight and zig zag stitches, and the manual.  (If you need guidance on what machines to use, feel free to message me with questions.)  
Thread, sewing machine needles, straight pins or quilt clips, a seam ripper, fabric scissors, measuring tape or ruler, marking chalk or pencils, 3 to 6 fat quarters of woven fabric (18"x22"), an ironing board or iron safe surface and a steam iron. 

Learners are responsible for acquiring all materials and will need them throughout the course.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
