I love seeing all the beautiful colors in the sky during the sunset. Capturing a sunset scene on paper is easier than it looks. In this one-time class appropriate for a variety of ages and abilities, learners will discuss their feelings and observations about sunsets. I will guide them in using drawing materials to draw the silhouettes of objects and the ground and then paint the sky with watercolors. We will also use some household materials to add interesting effects to our watercolors. Please note: I expect learners to know how to use watercolors properly (e.g. keeping the brush wet, using the brush correctly, washing the brush between colors, etc.) before this class. I may remind learners to use their supplies properly, but I will not be teaching these skills in this class. All of the outcomes of this project will be different, imperfections included. Watercolor can be an unpredictable medium. Your student is likely to get messy while creating. Thanks for understanding! Class experience: Introductions and class expectations Viewing pictures of sunsets, sharing experiences, feelings, and observations Drawing and coloring the silhouettes Painting the sunset colors Using additional materials Sharing art and final thoughts
Learning Goals
Students will not only learn how to create a scene like this one, they will also learn watercolor techniques they can use in other artworks.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Georgia Teaching Certificate in Music/Theater/Arts
Hello! Thank you for visiting my profile. My name is Valerie Cofer, and I am an art teacher based in the foothills of the Smokey Mountains in Tennessee, USA. I am a mother, grandmother, and cat lover. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with family and pets, watching sci-fi series on TV (Doctor Who and The Mandalorian are favorites), photography, cooking, and being in nature.
I possess a wealth of teaching experience to share. After graduating with a BFA from the University of West Georgia, I embarked on a 15-year career as an art educator. I taught well over 2,000 young artists in my time in the physical classroom. We explored many materials and techniques in my art classes. Since January 2020, I have been enjoying teaching ESL online. Teaching with Outschool combines both worlds, and I’m excited to bring my skills and abilities to the virtual classroom.
My goal is to offer lessons for learners that are full of fun and discovery. I aim to focus less on drawing and formal skills and more on the process and experience of making art. Children have an innate desire to create, regardless of age and skill level. Exploring art helps learners to understand, appreciate, and connect with the world around them. Art is a communication tool and an emotional outlet. Learning in art helps build creativity and problem-solving skills. Above all, making art is fun. I love seeing children discover something new and how each of their solutions is unique. Please let me know if you are interested in enrolling your learner in any of my classes outside of the times they are listed. I may be able to accommodate your schedule. I look forward to seeing your learner in the classroom soon!
