Class Experience

In this one time class, students will paint a beautiful watercolor sunset, using a variety of techniques. Class will begin with going over materials, and briefly describing the painting process, and doing any sketching necessary. Afterward, some time will be used to practice techniques, and the second half to create a finished painting, using a step by step approach.

I try to maintain a calm and engaging environment, emphasizing the process of creating art over the end result. I truly believe any one with an interest and willingness to learn can have a great time in this class.

Class time is about 45 minutes, though this can vary depending on class size. Smaller classes tend to move more quickly, and larger classes might run a few minutes over. Materials used will be a watercolor sketchbook or paper, drawing pencil, eraser, and watercolor paint in a variety of colors, and watercolor brushes.
Learning Goals
The class objectives (outside of an enjoyable experience and a pretty painting) are to break down a complex image into simple steps, and some watercolor techniques.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi there!

My name is Abi. My passion and expertise are in drawing and watercolor painting, but I also dabble in and have taught the basics in a few other mediums, such as acrylic painting, oil pastel, charcoal, and colored pencil.

I’ve been drawing and painting since very early childhood and have always embraced it as a part of who I am, and known it to be valuable resource in my life. A lot of my inspiration comes from the landscapes I grew up with or the feelings the weather or a book inspired in me. I believe that art is an outlet for both processing feelings or events through life, and is an underused tool to develop skills in observation and critical thinking. My teaching style is calm and centered in being a safe space and showing that the creative process can provide joy and peace. Mistakes happen, but its never the end of the world or something to be ashamed of. I'm dedicated to helping people better understand the world around them and to developing relationships to enrich life through art. I believe anyone who is interested and willing to try can become an artist.

I have been an art teacher for four years, and before that had six years of experience in support roles providing supervision and guidance to children within classroom and day-care settings.

In my free time I enjoy being outside, knitting, crocheting and am a big fiction reader. This year I hope to use my sketchbook practice to document my walks, bird sightings, and travels.
