1 hour per week. Learners will be encouraged, but not required, to complete the writing exercises outside of class time. Additional writing challenges will be given for optional practice.Assessment
I will offer written feedback and editing of submitted assignments. I will use the checklist given in the book to guide my feedback. I do not offer letter or number grades. Submission of the exercises will be encouraged but is not required. In order for the assignments to be evaluated, they must be either typed or very neatly handwritten. The files should be uploaded in a direct Outschool message to me rather than posted on the main classroom page. Photos of handwritten work may be submitted provided the photos are oriented in the correct direction, taken from directly above, and fill the frame of the picture. If I cannot read it, I will ask for a different file to be uploaded. All submitted assignments must be double-spaced.Class Experience
US Grade 4 - 6
**Note: The Thursday section at 1:05 PM Central has one week that meets earlier than the normally scheduled time. Please see the schedule for more precise information.* Using the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) writing methods including key word outlines and style techniques, learners will be guided through writing exercises with summer themes. Each week's class will open with an icebreaker question followed by a brief grammar or style lesson. A group writing exercise will introduce the structure and theme of that week's writing exercise. Time to begin the individual writing challenge will be given during class so that questions may be asked and immediate feedback given. The end of each week's class will be set aside for learners to share their writing with the class should they choose to do so. Week 1 - introduce key word outlines, inventive writing, style techniques, and sentence structure Week 2 - introduce paragraph structure with a five senses paragraph exercise Week 3 - discuss editing procedures and the story sequence chart with a summer twist Week 4 - writing from pictures with a summer vacation travel journal project Week 5 - adding additional style in the travel journal project Week 6 - learning to write a personal letter with a summer theme Week 7 - writing a critique of a summer book or movie Week 8 - writing summer poetry and final presentations Learners may send their writing challenges to me each week in order to receive editing and/or feedback. Presenting the projects to the class is encouraged, but not required. Learners should come to class with writing supplies for the individual writing time. Classes will be recorded for learners who will need to miss occasionally due to flexible summer schedules.
