Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
The Summer Writer's Block Party will provide a group work space for students to learn and to expand on their writing skills. This course will examine two different essay formats for students to practice their writing skills: the personal narrative essay and the compare/contrast essay. The sessions will be taught through lectures using PowerPoint presentations. Also, students will be required to engage with a writing website that provides tools and resources for writing strategies.

Weeks 1-4 - The Personal Narrative Essay - Students will be taught how to write a personal narrative essay to engage an audience. Student will be able to produce a five-paragraph piece of literature detailing a personal event.
Weeks 5-8 - The Compare and Contrast Essay - Students will be taught how to write an essay comparing and contrasting two subjects.

Students will work on a class essay during live meetings and will work on individual essays after class as their class project. Drafts of projects should be submitted for feedback.
Students will be required to orally present their essay/project to the class at the end of the session. Completed projects should be turned in before presentation to class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Greetings! My name is Vikki Harris . For the past 14 years, I have been working as a substitute teacher for a New York school district. I have had the pleasure of working with different types of students (Special Needs, ESL/ELL, Support Services, 1:1) with different learning styles and abilities. Also, I work with all grade levels, K-12. My focus has always been English. The majority of my assignments have been teaching English classes at the high school and middle school but I enjoy working with the younger students as well, helping them to build a strong English foundation.

I live by the strong belief that "Everyone has the right to a sound education."

Remember back when you had a substitute teacher in your classroom. Well, some things never change!
