Description

Class Experience

During the course, students will have the opportunity to share their own ideas for being creative and active while home. As the instructor, I also lead weekly discussions and provide useful information for activities such as reading challenges, writing prompts, outdoor quests, cooking and baking, etc. These lessons might be in the form of a live demonstration, internet link, graphic organizer, YouTube video, etc. Students are encouraged to be as specific as possible when making their own recommendations. If needed, I can help them with implementation. For example, if a student would like to start a book club, I can help choose an appropriate and engaging text with discussion questions. Or, if students want to share an activity, I can teach them how to design a goal plan or checklist. Please note, there is NO obligation to suggest or create a project for this class, but students are encouraged to listen and offer ideas when possible!

Since this is a "drop in/drop out" class, we will always start with introductions and a review of the last sessions so all participants feel welcomed. Students are then encouraged to share what they have been doing lately to keep safely active at home. Please note that ALL ideas must be approved by me (either before or during class) before students can actively promote them. (I am hoping that parents will know in advance what their student wishes to try. If for some reason students present or refer to activities which are inappropriate or unsafe on any level, I will immediately notify parents or guardians so they can intervene at home.)

At the end of each session, we will identify 2 or 3 of the "best" ideas for fighting boredom this week, and set a group goal for trying them out! Again, this is not a mandatory component of the class, but being part of the group is what makes this class tick.
To make this class effective, students are asked to try out some of the activities or challenges we come up with and/or report their own findings. Parents are encouraged to check in with students during the week to help with materials, provide feedback, offer suggestions, etc. I usually announce the following week's activity in advance so your student can get any supplies ready, but please email me if you have any questions.
Students are asked to have a notebook to record ideas and instructions for activities. They might also want to journal their experiences in class, and/or note contact information. When needed, I will send or link specific instructions for activities that require more research or planning.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
The successful participant will talk and listen respectfully, offer ideas and feedback when comfortable doing so, and try out something new to stay safe and active while home. There are no grades or rubrics for this class, but I am happy to provide feedback on student participation for parents, if requested.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Our activities change from week to week, but there is no obligation to join in. Sometimes, it's fun just to watch and chat! However, I do my best to list the items needed for future classes if your student would like to try them out. Please email me if you have any questions about supplies. Thanks! Becky
