Class Experience

This six-week multi-day course will provide direct instruction in vocabulary, which is the cornerstone of reading comprehension. I plan to make this class experience a great one by developing a relationship with each child. The students will be learning the words orally. Children can listen and learn far more than they can actually read themselves. The students will greatly improve their vocabulary base by learning the vocabulary words from Wordly Wise Voabulary for Kindergarten. (Book K) There are ten words in each of the twelve lessons in the book. This class will last six weeks. We will cover the four units in book, having twelve lessons, in this six-week course. The words will be explained by the teacher, using colorful picture cards for each of the ten words. Each word has a colorful picture card to help students understand the meaning of the word. The teacher and the learners will discuss what the word means and how it relates to them. Practice will be provided by using five approaches: finding the meaning using whatever part of speech, using context clues to find just the right word in the sentence, applying the meaning of the word, using the correct form of the word, then reading a narrative using the ten words in the lesson. Each lesson includes a fiction narrative of high interest. My learning style is informal with lots of smiles and student interaction. I want to have an fun and enriched classroom environment. I hope to get many eager learners!
The parents who have enrolled their children in my courses are happy!

Multi-day course: Weekly class routine: Two days per week

Each day we will cover one lesson.
* Discuss each of the ten vocabulary words using the colorful accompanying picture card.
* Practice saying the word together. The teacher will show a picture of the word and discuss its part of speech and usage.
* Modeling the word in several sentences so students can hear the word using in context. The sentences that use each definition are on a slide.
* Complete exercises in the workbook together in class, as directed by the teacher. Students will show understanding by circling the correct picture.
The reading passage for the week will be read. Students will listen to the story. The topic for the weekly stories is listed below. Students are invited to read and spell the words in our slide show.

Learning Goals
Students will learn vocabulary words vital to increased growth in their word base. The goal is to have the students internalize these words. Students will be made more aware of the words in their world and be able to add them to their normal spoken and written vocabulary. The words in this kindergarten book are also used and worked into the first grade book so students will still get exposure to these first words.
