This is a beginning phonics class designed to teach students how to blend, read, and write word families. The class is taught using a combination of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic strategies, and each class focuses on a new blend/sound that will help students construct CVC words within word families. Activities include listening to a short tale and identifying the target sound with picture clues, practicing writing CVC blends, and learning the five vowels through song. The class is...
Word Family Sort - Have students sort pictures or words into different word families based on their ending sounds. This is a great activity to help students understand the concept of word families and how words with similar endings can have similar sounds and meanings. Word Family Bingo - Bingo cards with words from the word families you are focusing on in class. Call out words from the word family and have students mark them on their bingo cards. This is a fun way to reinforce word family recognition and reading skills. Word Family Memory - Matching cards with pictures or words from the word families you are focusing on in class. Have students play a memory game by trying to match cards with the same word family. This is a great activity for visual learners and can also help with memory skills. Word Family Race - students will race to write as many words as they can from a particular word family in a set amount of time. This is a fun way to reinforce writing and spelling skills, as well as encourage healthy competition.
