Over the 8 weeks we'll meet, we will learn to read & spell 80 2nd-3rd grade words, while exploring the phonics behind the sounds we hear! Wow! We will meet twice weekly and focus on 10 new words each week. The first class of the week will be to read and practice spelling our 10 words. The second class we will have one more round of practice, followed by the Spelling Bee! The Spelling Bee is how the student is assessed. After the Spelling Bee, we'll take time to either review words that were missed, talk about words families our weekly words are a part of, or both! At 40 minutes a week, broken up in two- 20 minute segments, we have just enough time to meaningfully learn our words and have fun with new friends without getting spelling fatigue! This class will be highly interactive. During our Tuesday class, we build our spelling list together; exploring sounds we hear, spelling out loud together, then students writing them in their notebook. On Fridays everyone participates in the Spelling Bee, and we have so much fun together showing off our knowledge! My teaching style is upbeat, fun, and supportive. I fill as much time with learning and doing as possible, making sure to provide lots of space for praise and student achievement so that learning is fun, and a source of confidence. I often will put the spelling of words to a little tune, that students can sing along with me to cement to letter order into their brains! This is one of my favorite age groups, and spelling is one of the important, foundational concepts that often gets left out of many public school curricula. While best-guess spelling and similar methods are great for practicing phonics and building writing confidence, much of the English language simply doesn't follow common phonics rules- we are a language of memorization! But that doesn't mean we can't have fun while memorizing! See you in class, Spelling Bees!

Supply List
It is recommended that students have a spiral notebook or similar to keep all of their work in one place. Students should come to each session with a pencil/pen and this notebook (or paper).

Hello! My name is Marilena and I live in Washington State, USA. I teach several youth classes- Spanish, as well as elementary English spelling and phonics classes- as well as two middle school vocabulary and spelling classes to improve writing. I have the most amazing kids in each of my classes; the families on this site really are amazing!
Outside of Outschool, I am a special education instructional paraeducator at our local elementary school. I also teach Drama in an after-school program, now via Zoom. Formerly, I taught high school and middle school Spanish. Living in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, I love walking, kayaking, playing outside with my kids, and curling up with a nice book on a rainy day (which is often in these parts!)
I love working with and being around children; I love watching their face light up when they've mastered something. I design my lessons to be engaging, informative, and enjoyable; integrity of instruction is my #1 goal! I strive to make the most of my time with kids in every setting.
