Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
In this six-session course students will receive a basic introductory overview (or a solid review) of word functions and sentence diagramming, preparing students for more rigorous study later. As students begin to understand the structure of language, they gain confidence and can become better writers and communicators.

This class will assume a familiarity with the basic parts of speech. Students do NOT need to have full mastery, but should have some basic exposure to the concepts.

This class will focus on the specific functions of the words in a sentence [subject, predicate, direct object, prepositional phrase, predicate adjective, modifiers, etc]. We will learn to diagram sentences in order to visualize how the words fit together. I will use a variety of learning materials, which may include PowerPoint presentations, worksheets, collaborative classwork, diagramming puzzles, and other games.

If your learner is outside the ages of 9-14, but you believe they would benefit from the class, please reach out and let me know. Together we can decide if the class would be suitable for your learner's grammar level.

In each class, we will learn to identify a specific word function and to place those words correctly on a sentence diagram. We will continually build on this knowledge until we are able to diagram full simple sentences.

Course Schedule:
Class 1: Reviewing the Basics - Subjects and Predicates (simple and compound)

Class 2: Telling More About It - Modifiers (adjectives/adverbs)

Class 3: Receiving the Action - Direct and Indirect Objects

Class 4: Another Way to Say It- Predicate Nouns and Adjectives
(Classes 3 and 4 also include a review of verbs as we examine the functions of action vs linking verbs.)

Class 5: In Relation To - Prepositional Phrases as Modifiers

Class 6: The Extras - Diagramming Interjections
                Diagramming Spectacular Sentences!
Learning Goals
Students will learn to identify the functions of words and phrases in sentences. They will be able to visualize these functions as they learn to place each word and phrase into a sentence diagram.
