Class Experience

In this multi day class students will observe a science experiment and discuss the science, hypothesis, and conclusions surrounding it! Students will get to experience both chemistry and physics based experiments.

During week 1 students will observe the teacher as she creates a solar eclipse mimicking what happens during an actual eclipse! Students will also learn all about eclipses and what causes them. Since we should never look at a solar eclipse in real life, this is a fun and safe way to experience one!

During week 2 students will learn all about inertia by observing the teacher perform a fun egg drop experiment. We will discuss how changing variables can alter an experiment's outcome as the teacher swaps out supplies. Students will be encouraged to observe this experiment only as some eggs may break in the process.

During week 3 students will explore densities by observing (and creating) their own solutions and mixtures. Students will observe how the density of a liquid will impact how it reacts to water. Students will also be encouraged to create their own lava lamps that they can keep as class souvenirs!

During week 4 students will observe as the teacher makes the ultimate volcano experiment! Students will also learn all about what causes this cool reaction. This won't be an ordinary volcano though. We are going to try and mimic real lava by adding things to the concoction. What will happen if we freeze the vinegar? What if we add ketchup? Does the shape of the volcano matter? Let's find out together as we finish this four week class with a bang.

This class is designed to be highly interactive and students will be encouraged to actively participate throughout class.

Learning Goals

Students will be introduced to the science behind: a solar eclipse, inertia, densities and solutions, and chemical reactions in a highly engaging and fun way.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Parental supervision is encouraged if students decide to create their own experiments in weeks 1 and 3. Students are encouraged to be active observers only in weeks 2 and 4 due to the potential for mess. Parents may want to remind students to only observe the experiment in weeks 2 and 4. Parents must remain off camera per Outschool policy.
Supply List
In week three students can bring the following materials if they wish to participate: A clear water glass (the bigger the better), a spoon, water, oil (vegetable works great), syrup (pancake or maple), food colouring, salt, and a clear plastic water bottle.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
