In this two week camp, students will meet three times per week to explore these natural disasters and how they affect Earth and its inhabitants.

Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Beginner - Intermediate Level
Follows Teacher-Created Curriculum
Aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)
6 lessons//2 Weeks
 Week 1
Lesson 1
Earth's Structure
Students will learn about the composition of Earth and the causes of earthquakes. We'll use foldables to document understanding and explore how earthquakes happen and how they are measured. Class will finish up with a game to assess mastery.
Lesson 2
Earthquake STEM Challenge
After learning about earthquakes, we will explore the impacts of earthquakes on people and communities. Students will make an earthquake table, and then design a building that can withstand the force of an earthquake through a STEM challenge. We will begin the challenge during class and students will complete it after class.
Lesson 3
Volcanoes
This lesson will cover how and where volcanoes form. We will take an interactive tour of the Ring of Fire using PBS Media, and complete a learning log on our findings. Students will also make a map of the Ring of Fire and play an interactive game on NearPod.
 Week 2
Lesson 4
More About Volcanoes
As we explore volcanoes around the world, students will observe a teacher demonstration of how volcanoes can erupt under water. They will be provided with instructions to recreate the eruption WITH PARENT SUPERVISION. We will also create a visual model of the parts of a volcano.
Lesson 5
Landslide!
After watching a video about the causes and effects of landslides around the world, students will conduct an investigation to find out how different soil components and angles of slope affect the impact of the landslide. We will play an interactive game to assess learning.
Lesson 6
Careers in Earth Science
The final lesson of camp will bring everything together through the exploration of Earth Science Careers. We'll learn about volcanologists, seismologists, geologists, and civil engineers. Students will complete a learning log in the first half of the lesson and then create a product of their choosing to teach the class what they learned. They will have a product menu to choose from.
  • Students will leave this camp with a thorough understanding of the composition of Earth, as well as how earthquakes, volcanoes, and landslides can quickly change our landscape.
I taught 5th grade science in the largest public school system in my state for 17 years. During that time I attended intense science training programs led by Rice University, Baylor College of Medicine, and i3Laser through the Smithsonian Institution/Department of Education. I was honored as Teacher of the Year on my campus and a finalist for the District Teacher of the Year. After 17 years, I moved from the classroom to become a STEM instructional coach, supporting teachers across the district in the STEM content areas, and finally as a math and science instructional coach, leading professional development and supporting teachers and students at low performing campuses.
