In this class, students delve deeply into number sense in a hands-on way using physical or printable Montessori manipulatives, creating a firm mathematical foundation with numbers to the millions. Students who understand and truly master math concepts naturally learn to love math, and I want my students to experience math in a hands-on way where they know they can try new things, make mistakes, and learn from them. Each class begins with a brief glance at the calendar and once-a-week weather graph to build number fluency, confidence, and class relationships. Hands-on games, activities, and mathematical conversations help engage students and give them a natural way to apply concepts. We work with place value with Infinity Street, addition and subtraction with regrouping (dynamic addition), skip counting, patterns, fractions, telling time, money, data and graphing, probability, basic and advanced multiplication, basic and long division, geometry, estimating, and measurement. Students need to have the actual manipulatives with them (or a printable version) as we work through these together. There is a second camera used in class to show the teacher's table so that the students are guided through problems step by step, working toward independence. This class can be for an advanced third grade class or a fourth grade class. Each week of class is unique and students may stay all summer or come in for the week they need. This schedule may be adapted to meet specific learner needs: End of May: Extend graphing and probability content with a sports theme. June: Review with ocean theme July: Review with project (based on student interests, but probably build your own aquarium) August: Review and extend concepts with a rainforest theme. Class restarts the last week of August. Class Policies: -All students need to have either printable or physical versions of the manipulatives needed for class to fully participate. -I prefer videos on. Depending on the device, students are often able to tilt their screens to show what they are working on at their tables so I can help them with questions more easily. -I prefer students stay unmuted to help with participation, but sometimes, due to background noise or static from a connection, I may need to mute students and have them unmute to answer questions. -I am happy to share recordings for missed classes. -The students and I try very hard to create a supportive and respectful learning community. My students need to treat each other with kindness and respect. Specific plans for the first 4 weeks: Week of May 20th: Design a favorite sports survey and survey friends/family for next week Complete sports-related probability experiment Week of May 27th: Combine class sports survey data to create a graph Discuss the benefits and challenges in how our survey worked Week of June 3rd: Solve dynamic addition and subtraction story problems about deep sea animals Roll skip counting dice to practice counting and relate to probability/fractions Week of June 10th: Solve multiplication problems about sea turtles on the checkerboard Use pattern blocks to design a sea creature; Count and graph the blocks used; Use multiplication to double/triple/quadruple the totals
