Summer Review Hands-On Montessori Inspired Math Level C (for 2nd/3rd Grades)

In this ongoing class, students use Montessori manipulatives to explore number sense and solve problems. Students use higher level thinking skills to explore place value with large numbers, skip counting, addition/subtraction, and more.

Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 3
Intermediate - Advanced Level
Students delve deeply into number sense in a hands-on way using physical or printable Montessori manipulatives, creating a firm mathematical foundation in numbers to the millions. Students who understand math learn to love math, and I want my students to experience math in a hands-on way where they know they can try new things, make mistakes, and learn from them. Each class begins with a brief, routine-oriented calendar time to help build number fluency, confidence, and class relationships. Fun games, songs, and mathematical conversations help engage students and give them a natural way to apply concepts. We work with place value with Infinity Street, addition and subtraction with regrouping (dynamic addition), skip counting, patterns, fractions, telling time, money, data and graphing, probability, basic and advanced multiplication, division, geometry, estimating, and measurement. Students need to have the actual manipulatives with them (or a printable version) as we work through these together. There is a second camera used in class to show the teacher's table so that the students are guided through problems step by step, working toward independence. This class can be used as a review of 2nd grade class or a third grade math class. Each week of class is unique and students may stay all summer or come in for the week they need.

This schedule may be adapted to meet specific learner needs.

June: Review key concepts like dynamic addition and subtraction, multiplication, division, and more with an ocean life theme.

July: Review key concepts through a design a waterpark project.

August: Review key concepts with a rainforest theme.

Many students are ready to move to to Level D at the completion of this course (https://outschool.com/classes/hands-on-montessori-inspired-advanced-math-level-d-level-d-2x-a-week-with-manipulatives-CFt9KJlQ?usid=6msWnIQO&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link) or may choose to retake Level C, depending on progress. Class restarts the last week of August.

Class Policies:
-All students need to have either printable or physical versions of the manipulatives needed for class to fully participate.
-I prefer videos on. Students are often able to tilt their screens to show what they are working on at their tables so I can give feedback and answer questions.
-I prefer students stay unmuted to help with participation, but sometimes, due to background noise or static from a connection, I may need to mute students. Please help your child learn how to unmute so he/she can participate.
-I am happy to share recordings for missed classes.
-The students and I try very hard to create a supportive and respectful learning community. Students need to treat each other with kindness and respect.

Specific plans for the first 4 weeks:

Week of May 20th:
Design a favorite sports survey and survey friends/family for next week
Complete sports-related probability experiment

Week of May 27th:
Combine class sports survey data to create a graph
Discuss the benefits and challenges in how our survey worked

Week of June 3rd:
Solve dynamic addition and subtraction story problems about deep sea animals
Roll skip counting dice to practice counting and relate to probability/fractions

Week of June 10th:
Solve multiplication problems about sea turtles on the checkerboard
Use pattern blocks to design a sea creature; Count and graph the blocks used; Double and triple totals using multiplication
Learning Goals
Students will gain confidence as mathematicians as they review key concepts in preparation for the school year.
