US Grade 9 - 12
Over the course of this 6-week class, students will revisit topics from Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and Precalculus. Every week will focus on a certain overarching topic. The first week has students going over the different function families while, every subsequent week, has those same functions families revisited under a different context, i.e. graphs, properties, etc. The final week of the class will act as a little preview of the first topic that students will learn in their AP Calculus class with an introduction to limits. The structure of each class will be about the same. There will be some direct instruction, where examples will be covered and students are expected to take notes. A whole-group discussion will then follow where an exercise or two will be solved with student input. Throughout, students will be encouraged to ask questions or raise any confusions they might have. Finally, if time permits, the end of each class will have some "check your understanding" time where students will be given practice problems to try out on their own.
Learning Goals
Students will review the following function families: linear, polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, absolute value, and piece-wise. These function families will serve as a basis for future lessons as students review the properties, algebra, and language of functions in the context of these function families as well as other elementary functions. An emphasis will also be placed on different representations of functions: analytical, graphical, tabular, and verbal.
