Class Experience

US Grade 2
🏁Ready, Set, Read!🏁
In this class, students will strengthen their reading comprehension skills by reading different fiction and non-fiction passages and learning weekly reading strategies. This is an ongoing class that will meet twice a week, students can enroll and unenroll anytime.📚

Weekly topics are all related to reading concepts that are relevant to 2nd and 3rd graders, recommended for children ages 7-9 years old.

Students will take turns reading a passage provided by the teacher. The teacher will hold a discussion to help develop oral language and each student will complete an online worksheet which will be automatically graded. Students are encouraged to use tools to support their reading such as a highlighter, ruler, sticky notes, etc and reading passages can be printed out before class if needed. Students will use evidence-based reading comprehension strategies that allow them to comprehend texts in a deeper way. We will connect the ideas in the text to students' background knowledge throughout class through discussion and note-taking.

Structure:
⭐Introduce the genre and topic of the article and discuss background knowledge/make predictions about the text
⭐Discuss and model the week's reading strategy
⭐Group reading of the text using the reading strategy and uncovering the meaning of unknown vocabulary words (marking up the text)
⭐Comprehension questions are discussed and answered together

We will read one text each week. Students will learn a reading strategy and will practice using that strategy with the text of the week. Some strategies that we will learn are:
🔎finding text features
🔎visualizing the text
🔎skimming/scanning
🔎identifying unknown vocabulary words
🔎questioning
🔎annotating
🔎making connections
🔎drawing inferences

While reading, students will practice their comprehension strategy, practice vocabulary, and grammar skills, and discuss the text with their classmates. At the end of each reading, they will work together to answer questions about the text. In the second meeting of the week, the student will be reintroduced to the weekly text and review the prior lesson, vocabulary, reading skills, and strategy then reread and practice the text for fluency and continue to apply their newly learned reading skills. The students are guided to ask and respond to questions as they read to develop skills in key ideas and details to synthesize, process, and comprehend their text.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to read and understand fiction and non-fiction grade-level texts (texts are leveled at grades 2-3) by using reading comprehension strategies. Students will be able to use context clues, background knowledge, and dictionary skills as they uncover meaning, vocabulary, and make inferences when reading a story with other students!

👋Hello Learners and Families!👋

My name is Teacher Kayla and I am a preschool teacher with a passion for early growth and development!

I believe every child is unique, capable, and full of potential. I love teaching young children and have a passion for teaching ASL, the preschool curriculum, and Montessori practices. I also am excited to teach movement and cooking classes to learners of all ages and backgrounds.

Within my teaching philosophy, I strongly believe in play-based and inquiry-based learning and strive to incorporate movement, songs, stories, crafts, games, and manipulatives into all my teachings. I love finding ways to make learning fun, meaningful, and engaging for each student and fostering a love for lifelong learning at a young age!

I am from Canada and have completed my B.A in Early Childhood Studies which provided me a strong understanding of the whole growth of the child from various developmental lenses. I have over 9 years of experience teaching children in both an in-person and digital format in a kindergarten classroom, EarlyON family center, toddler classroom, and Sunday school. I have worked at various arts, science, and sports summer camps for over 8 years as a camp counselor, camp coordinator, and camp director, and also have been a soccer coach for age 9/10 girls for the past 4 summers.

I will offer a variety of one-time and ongoing classes in order to focus on all developmental domains for early childhood. No matter that class, you can be sure that my classes will be lots of fun, super engaging, and high energy!

Thank you for reading! I feel so lucky that I get to teach what I love every day. I am so excited to be a part of your child's growth and success; I look forward to seeing them my the classroom! 😄

📋Class Policies:

1) If a class is small or has especially talkative students, we may end a little earlier or later, but I will always try to end on time.

2) If a scheduled class does not meet the minimum enrollment, I will contact the parent before class time to offer to transfer their learner to a new day and time. If requested, I may choose to teach the class at the original time.

3) Classes will begin on time, even if all learners are not yet present in the classroom. To respect the time of the learners in the class, I will contact absent learners after class to see if they had technical issues or other challenges.
4) If no learners are present in the classroom, I will wait 10 minutes into the scheduled time before exiting the classroom.

5) If I am late because of having technical challenges myself, I will offer to stay late or transfer learners to a new session.

6) I expect learners to treat each other kindly in class and to show respect for everyone present. I treat others the way I want to be treated, and I expect the same in return.
