Class Experience
In this course, students will read the book The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate. During our live class time, students will be able to discuss sections of the novel that they find interesting, confusing, or noteworthy. We will discuss basic comprehension as well as character development, plot, setting, theme, and vocabulary. For this course, students will be expected to read some of the novel outside of class meeting times so there is more time for discussion during the live...
Students will read the novel The One and Only Ivan and learn associated vocabulary, as well as work on comprehension and the understanding of character development, plot, setting, and theme.
Certified K-12 Educator with Masters' degree Experienced Summer School Teacher and Tutor
Homework will be assigned to students at the end of each class. Students should expect to only have reading homework for this class. Students should expect to read 1-2 chapters a day of the novel, taking them between 15-30 minutes depending on this reading speed. Reading assignments for each class are listed below: Class 1: No reading necessary prior to class Class 2: Read pages 1-150 prior to class Class 3: Read pages 150-end prior to class
The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate
Students will be given an informal written report at the end of class detailing class discussion and student participation levels.
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
The One and Only Ivan follows the story of animals in captivity and may not be appropriate for all students.
