Join us for a fun and challenging book club where we meet every week to discuss a new book. Every time we meet, I will lead a round-table discussion for each book we read. Every week we will discuss topics ranging from the author's intent to character and plot development. Then we will all share our opinions as we analyze the works. By facilitating the discussion, I will model to the students how to clearly express their thoughts and debate and discuss topics with their peers. Every student...
Book clubs in middle school are a great way to teach students to form and share opinions with others which is an important skill to have as they get older. I run all book clubs so every student is able to answer questions that I pose and participate in the lively discussion. I am also aware that some students prefer to participate through chat than on a microphone. This is completely acceptable. My goal for the students is to get them to share their thoughts however they feel comfortable doing that.
Learners must have access to all books and come to class each week prepared to discuss the week's selection. Links are affiliate. These books sometimes deal with big issues but all of the books are middle grade and age-appropriate. There are warnings for romance, war, death, violence, racism, historical events, and sexism. If students want to discuss any big issues in the book club, I will listen to what they are feeling and respond in an appropriate way but will also redirect to the questions I have planned for the students. As every family is different, please review all books before signing up your student. Amazon, GoodReads, Common Sense Media, and Kirkus are all good resources for this.
