Wonder by R.J. Palacio is an amazing book with a great theme: Choose kind! The story is about a 10-year-old kid named Auggie Pullman who is going to school for the first time. Auggie has been homeschooled his entire life due to medical issues caused by craniofacial differences. Auggie overcomes many challenges surrounding navigating middle school as a kid who stands out from the crowd. In this class, we will read and discuss the book Wonder. Learners will be assigned about 80 pages per week...
Students will learn that there is more to a person than how they look. Students will practice speaking and listening skills. Students will write in response to questions using evidence. Reading skills covered: determining theme, character traits, understanding point of view and perspective, figurative language, extended responses
I have been teaching upper elementary for 9 years now and I have read Wonder with my 4th and 5th grade students for the past 5 years. This book is always a favorite with any class and students continue to talk about the theme and characters all year long! They learn so much about bullying, kindness, and acceptance from this story.
Students will read around 80 pages each week. The final week the students will be tasked with watching the movie as homework.
Students will need a copy of the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour 40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
This book deals with some intense bullying. Our class will be a safe space to discuss these issues. I have experience discussing this book with 4th and 5th graders for the past 5 years.
