In this two hour camp we will discuss how to learn from failure and stay inspired to reach our goals. We will read and discuss the brief biographies of Albert Einstein, Amy Tan (author of The Joy Luck Club), and Michael Jordan, drawing from their experiences to help us create a concrete plan. I am an empathetic, encouraging teacher and love to help students find inspiration from reading. The camp will follow this schedule: 10 min.~Introductions, share goals, review camp schedule, class guidelines/expectations Students write goal/s and past roadblocks/rejection/failures--share out 15 min.~Read and discuss Albert Einstein biography (note his roadblocks and how he overcame them) 10 min.~Students respond to bio with write/draw/think 5 min. ~Share out/summary of lessons learned/ideas to adopt 5 min.~BREAK-official break for restroom/stretch/ food/drink (Though students may do any of these things without asking at any time during the camp.) 15 min.~Read and discuss Amy Tan biography (note her roadblocks and how she overcame them) 10. min~Students respond to bio with write/draw/think 10 min. ~Share out/summary of lessons learned/ideas to adopt 15 min.~Read and discuss Michael Jordan biography (note his roadblocks and how he overcame them) 10. min~Students respond to bio with write/draw/think 10 min.~Share out/summary of lessons learned/ideas to adopt 5 min.~Wrap up--discuss similarities between the three biographies/More tips for staying inspired/Share one take-away
Learning Goals
Students will:
~practice reading comprehensions skills by answering questions about the text
--Clearly identify their goal/s
--Identify what roadblocks get in the way of reaching their goal/s
--Identify the common roadblocks faced by three people who reached their goals and the actions/attitudes that helped them (Albert Einstein, Amy Tan, and Michael Jordan)
--Create a plan to overcome specific roadblocks using ideas from the three inspiring people we study
