Incorporate high school literature skills while completing Around the World in Eighty Days. Literary elements, figures of speech, and vocabulary will drive class discussions from reading independently.

Class experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Your student will gain focused skills that can be transferred to reading any other works of literature. We will recognize the author's use of figures of speech references and literature devices as they occur. Students will be able to recognize them in a natural reading experience.
Classic literature we read today has "stood the test of time." References, movies, and images that appear in everyday life from these books are intwined in part of our culture because of deep meaning these writers have evoked over the decades and centuries. This class is structured to teach your learner to recognize literature curriculum benchmarks at the high school level. I hold a current MA Ed. and enjoy watching students discover as they read quality material. I have taught and tutored reading across all grade levels K-12 since 1996.
Homework Offered
Learners will be expected to read independently each week and complete light homework study about literary elements.
2 - 4 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Your learner will be assessed in the ability to read the required material weekly and thoughtfully contribute to the discussion of that material. Kahoot responses will quiz your learner, and will cover our discussion and basic comprehension of our reading. A certificate of completion will be extended to your learner upon completing the required material.
Grades Offered
Print the packet for each book when uploaded.
Your learner can access the book free from the provided "Project Gutenberg" link, or access their own copy to read at their choice.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Jules Verne's life will be highlighted during the author study. He was shot by a mentally ill nephew, which will be discussed during the course because it affected his abilities as a lifelong writer.

In Around the World in 80 Days, there are themes of gambling, datura seed usage, references to the practice of Sati, and a man's finger is cut off to avoid being shot. The characters do procure a gun purchase. The century of this written material eludes "political correctness" aspects of today throughout.

These books still are culturally referenced and influence our current time.
