In this fun and interactive 12 week workshop, students will create 6 various writing pieces! We will learn stages of The Writing Process, weekly vocabulary to enhance our writing skills, and review grammar principles. 

This class focuses on finding our inner voice, while developing strong communication skills through our writing style! We will edit & produce unique writing formats. I'll provide a syllabus and learning materials to use during our course. 

Introduction to each other and class style, game about commonly misspelled words, learning the 4 stages of the writing process: Planning, Drafting, Revising, and Publishing, and learning about taking notes and making outlines. We will end with notetaking activity which will also be homework.

Introduction and The Writing Process

Learn how to write paragraphs from notes and move into summarizing a reference. We will learn new vocabulary words for the week, and play game/activity about grammar (contractions.) Writing assignment for the week will be Summarizing a Reference.

Writing from Notes and Note making/Outlines

Grammar lesson on prefixes and suffixes, editing activities, and how to write a compare-contrast essay. Q & A at the end on current writing pieces or feedback from teacher

Compare-Contrast Essay

We will explore research topics for our report. Lesson will be on writing a bibliography and citing a source. We will go over guidelines for presenting written pieces, and how to be an attentive and respectful audience.

Research Report with Bibliography

Classifying parts of speech game, introduce new vocabulary words, and listen to our writers present their work. This can be one whole essay or snippets from 2 or 3 (writers' choice!)

Presentation Day-Being a respectful audience, and a confident presenter. 

Begin class with an activity for writing out instructions. We will focus on using time-order words/ phrases and sequencing vocabulary. Grammar and Vocabulary review game! We will learn aspects of writing a personal narrative essay, which will be our homework assignment.

Personal Narrative Essay

We will review various graphic organizers, homophones, and learn our new vocabulary words. We will read some historical fiction pieces and learn how to create our own.

Historical Fiction Essay

We will explore inventive writing prompts and the beauty and spectrum of poetry. Writers should be motivated to bring favorite piece of poetry and/ or inventive writing to class (by different authors to share!) We will also have a show and tell at the end of class (unique talent, hobby, music, favorite book, etc.)

Grammar activity and game on abbreviations and principal parts for irregular verbs. Writers will be presenting their work of choice. Peer revision, questioning, and positive feedback will be encouraged. 

Vocabulary review game! We will learn about prepositions and prepositional phrases. We will read examples of newspaper editorials and discuss major components.

Newspaper Editorial Essay

This will be a wrap-up and review day of what we have learned so far in course. Optional assessment will be given to those who are interested. We will read examples of free verse and creative writing pieces. This will be our last assignment for course!
