New to Outschool? Use code SEANAMO20 to save $20 on this class! Beat the summer slide by reviewing your math skills all summer long! Each week we will review a different third grade math standard. Then we will make it a little more challenging to start preparing for the fourth grade standards they will be learning this upcoming school year. I believe in using the I do, we do, you do method of teaching. I will start by sharing a few examples and go through the steps. Then we will go through a few examples together. Finally, students will have an opportunity to test out their skills on their own. Week of 6/9: Two-Step Word Problems Using Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division We will strengthen our understanding of multiplication and division and reinforce the two-step word problem third grade standard. Week of 6/16: Fractions and Mixed Numbers We will go over how to find the fraction or mixed number in shapes, on number lines, or in word problems. We will also add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers that have the same denominator. This reinforces the third grade fraction standard and provides a solid foundation for the fourth grade fraction standards. Week of 6/23: Improper Fractions We will learn how to convert an improper fraction into a mixed number and how to convert a fraction into a mixed number. In fourth grade, students will learn how to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers. This will help them with those problems. Week of 6/30 and 7/7: Comparing and Finding Equivalent Fractions We will complete simple fourth grade problems and learn how to find an equivalent fraction. We will also learn how to cross multiply to compare fractions and solve word problems. Week of 7/14: Area and Perimeter We will find the area and perimeter of quadrilaterals and abnormal shapes. This reinforces the third and fourth grade standard. Week of 7/21: Finding Elapsed Time with Word Problems We will reinforce our third grade standard of finding the elapsed time using number lines and a clock. Then we will make it a step harder and solve word problems to ensure understanding. Week of 7/28: Multiplying One-Digit Numbers by Two-Digit Numbers To prepare for multi-digit multiplication, we will learn how to multiply one-digit numbers with two-digit numbers using the standard algorithm and the area model. Week of 8/4: Beginning Long Division without Remainders Learners will get an introduction to long division. I will introduce the standard algorithm, box method, and a mnemonic device to help them complete a problem without remainders. Week of 8/11: Multiplication and Division Fact Families This week we will go over fact families. While a learner may not know what 20 divided by 5 is, they can find the answer by knowing that 5 multiplied by 4 equals 20. Understanding fact families can help students with long division in the future. Week of 8/18: Classifying and Identifying Lines and Angles Learners will go over parallel, perpendicular, and intersecting lines. We will also discuss and learn how to identify acute, right, obtuse, straight, and reflex angles. Week of 8/25: Classifying and Identifying Triangles and Quadrilaterals We will go over how to classify triangles and quadrilaterals. We will talk about the different characteristics of each shape like number of sides, types of lines, and angles.
