Why Mental Math? Mental Math helps students learn to manipulate numbers in their head. While algorithms are certainly important, mental math gives students a strong understanding of numbers, place value, and how they relate to one another. In this ongoing summer class, students gain practice in skills in mental addition and subtraction while engaging in game play. This class follows a Singapore Math style. It's perfect for those who have already been introduced to addition and subtraction, but need some more practice becoming fluent. It's also great for kids who love math, and want to keep up their skills over the summer. All activities in this class will be centered around addition and subtraction, specifically building MENTAL MATH STRATEGIES. Some place value is implied in the work we do, so students should have been exposed to place value before joining this class. They should have a solid understanding of addition and subtraction facts, though they do NOT need to be memorized completely. Some strategies used in this class: -Add tens and ones -Adding up -Make the next ten -Make a Zero, then subtract -Subtract tens and ones ****************** SUMMER 2024 ****************** The schedule below lists the focus for each week.
