This live, four-week class will focus on creating deep understanding around addition and subtraction. Doing the standard algorithm is effective, but sometimes students miss the deeper concepts because they are focused on getting the right answer and doing it the same way every time. Number sense is essential to developing mental math and solving equations more quickly. This class will be student led, responding to student needs as they arise in our discussions. Learning topics will be...
Students will practice addition and subtraction strategies that take them beyond standard algorithm and using their fingers. 1.NBT.C.4- Add within 100, including adding a two-digit number and a one-digit number, and adding a two digit number and a multiple of 10, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used. Understand that in adding two-digit numbers, one adds tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose a ten. 1.NBT.C.5- Given a two-digit number, mentally find 10 more or 10 less than the number, without having to count; explain the reasoning used. 1.NBT.C.6- Subtract multiples of 10 in the range 10-90 from multiples of 10 in the range of 10-90 (positive or zero differences), using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used. 2.NBT.B.5- Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
I hold a standard teaching license for K-6 elementary education, with three years of experience teaching math to students who needed extra support with foundational skills. I have taught for five years in public schools and two years homeschooling a family member in middle school.
