In this class, students will meet for 50 minutes, once a day for 5 consecutive days to create paper cutout Pokemon collages featuring the Alolan island guardians. These are complex characters, so we will take our time and create one guardian per class, with time on Day 5 to tie up loose ends and add details. Students may also have time to place their finished characters onto a collaged background environment, resulting in a fun, one-of-a-kind piece of art. Day 1: Let's start with Tapu Lele!...
After this week, students will have a greater understanding of color and shape as they relate to their favorite island guardians, as well as unique pieces of collage art to display. Beyond that, they will also have an enhanced artistic eye, increased awareness of their own style, and the confidence to develop that style by utilizing items they may not previously have considered.
I have been captivated by paper cut out collage as an art form since my first introduction to Henri Matisse in middle school. In 2017, I began selling my own collage art to friends and family, and in 2019, I launched Bramble Schell Studio, my design business where I create stickers, greeting cards, and prints as well as digital pattern and surface work.
- scissors - glue sticks - heavy background surface paper (watercolor paper, cardboard, etc) - black paper (or any regular paper that students can color black) - at least one sheet each of pink, purple, yellow, red, and orange paper (again, students can create their own!) - any additional different types of paper students may want to use for collaging: printer paper, construction paper, origami paper, rice paper, tissue paper, newsprint, old scrap paper, pages from old books or magazines, etc. - crayons, colored pencils, sharpies, gel pens, metallic pens optional: glitter glue, washi tape
4 hours 10 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Parental guidance is required, as students will be using scissors.
