What's included
1 live meeting
1 in-class hours per weekHomework
1-2 hours per week. There will be homework in this course depending on the pace of each session. Students need to keep up with the assignments to get the full benefit of this course.Assessment
The goal of the class is to practice level 1 chemistry problems by completing the handouts provided for each session. As such, assessments are limited but offered for selected topics.Grading
For selected topics, there may be quizzes. Students will be able to see their grades right after submitting the quiz. Parents may request the grades from me if needed.Class Experience
US Grade 9 - 12
Intermediate - Advanced Level
This class is an ongoing class intended for students who have taken one year of high school chemistry and is meant to help review certain topics before taking AP Chemistry (based on the Honor Chemistry US Curriculum). Students have the flexibility of subscribing and unsubscribing as needed based on the topics listed below. During each session, we will review the topic of the day and will apply what we learned to solving practice problems. My primary goal here is to provide a comfortable place where learners can freely ask questions and practice their problem solving skills with my assistance. We will work through the problems in groups and as a whole class. I will be using an online chalkboard, worksheets, simulations and presentations to teach and review the topics. Handouts that go along with the presentations will be provided. Students are welcome to send me any specific questions related to the topic of the day. Preexisting knowledge or familiarity with certain topics is expected since later chemistry concepts build on earlier ones. The structure of each session will include the following: =>reviewing the topic of the day using presentations and simulations (if applicable) =>providing practice problems and working on the problems as a class =>answering any questions students may have on the topic of the day Schedule: ⚛️ ⚛️ ⚛️ Atoms, Electrons, & Periodic Table⚛️ ⚛️ ⚛️ ✏️✏️Week 1 ✏️Day 1 What is on the Periodic Table? =>Atomic Structure, protons, neutrons, electrons, ions, isotopes =>Online quiz =>Practice problems ✏️Day 2 =>Lewis dot + electron configuration =>Practice problems ✏️✏️Week 2 ✏️Day 3 =>Organization of the periodic table & Periodic trends =>Practice problems ⚛️ ⚛️ ⚛️ Chemical Nomenclature & Chemical Reactions⚛️ ⚛️ ⚛️ ✏️Day 4 =>Naming & formula writing: binary covalent and binary ionic compounds =>Practice problems [Please review the periodic table and the locations of metals and nonmetals before this class] ✏️✏️Week 3 ✏️Day 5 =>Naming & formula writing: ionic compounds with roman numerals and polyatomic ions =>Practice problems [Students need to be familiar with the topics from the last class before this class] ✏️Day 6 =>Naming & formula writing: Acids =>Online quiz: Chemical Nomenclature =>Word equations to balanced chemical equations =>Practice problems [Students need to be familiar with the topics from the last class before this class] ✏️✏️Week 4 ✏️Day 7 =>Identifying the types of reaction and predicting the products =>Practice problems [Students need to be familiar with the topics from the previous lessons before this class] ⚛️ ⚛️ ⚛️Unit Conversions, Mole and Stoichiometry⚛️ ⚛️ ⚛️ ✏️Day 8 =>Unit conversions: converting between units, including metric units =>Practice problems ✏️✏️Week 5 ✏️Day 9 =>Mole: converting between particles, mole and mass =>Practice problems [Students need to be familiar with unit conversion and scientific notation before this class] ✏️Day 10 =>Stoichiometry: Limiting Reactant & Excess Reactant =>Practice problems Note: =>I will leave the zoom session if nobody shows up within the first 5 minutes of each session. =>class may run over the allotted time depending on the students at times, but students are welcome to leave at the end of the scheduled time => This is a subscription based, ongoing class.
