There are many great reasons for learning Greek and Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes! The benefits are well worth the small amount of effort it takes to study and remember them. Over 60% of English language words have Greek or Latin roots and spelling structures. Knowledge of these foundational roots has the following benefits: You will.... 1. Build Vocabulary Knowing just one root opens up the meanings of multiple English words, allowing students to read and use new words with confidence. 2. Improve Spelling Learning root/prefix/suffix spelling patterns helps students put these parts together into correctly spelled, complex words. 3. Achieve Higher Test Scores Most standardized tests throughout a student's life contain vocabulary and comprehension sections that require understanding of difficult or complex vocabulary. A knowledge of word roots helps a student make educated guesses about the meanings and thus improves their test scores. -------------- WHAT WILL WE DO IN THIS COURSE? After being presented with the prefixes and roots of the day via engaging powerpoint slides and other visuals, students will be encouraged to brainstorm in class to share words that use these roots. They will be challenged to use pictures to identify words, or to come up with words on their own that use roots and affixes that we've learned. We will share these as a class, engaging in lively discussion as we build our vocabulary together. Each lesson will stand on its own, and all information needed for the lesson will be presented on that day. ------------------------------ GENERAL CLASS SCHEDULE 1. Greetings and Warm-up 2. Introduction of Prefix and 1-2 Roots for the day, using a variety of visuals and class discussion 3. Brainstorming as learners think of words they already know that use the roots of the day 4. Learning the meaning of the root and the definition of at least five English words derived from each root. 5. If time permits, we will end with some type of fun game or activity related to the roots of the day ____________________________ Optional Notebook/Notecards/Folder: Students may choose to create an optional notebook, or collection of notecards, or a folder of our handouts as a way to remember what we study. For each class, they will receive a prefix "card", pictures to help remember the meaning of each root, and a list of some of the words we discuss in class. These can be cut out, colored, and placed on the provided root sheets each week. NOTE: If a student does not have access to a printer, they are always welcome to draw their own graphics for each root. They can use the handouts as a guide, or create their own unique image for each root.
