Class Experience

This is a summer course that focuses on the steps of the writing process, basic editing skills, presentation skills and building a writer's craft. We will focus on writing fiction stories. Each class will follow a structured format including modeling, practicing and sharing. I will provide whole group and individual instruction during each class.

 Fiction Stories
This unit will focus on using your imagination to tell a story. We will work on creating characters, a setting, a problem, and a solution for each story. We will learn how to construct strong introductions, sequence a story into a beginning, middle, & ending, and write concluding sentences.

Topics Covered Week 1:
What is fiction?
We will learn how to identify fiction stories and discuss key elements like problem, solution, and the use of personification. We will learn how to brainstorm ideas and plan.

Writing
We will learn how to take the ideas we planned and put them into a beginning, middle, and ending.

Topics Covered Week 2:
Writing & Checking
We will continue writing our stories and learn how to add details to make our stories more descriptive. We will learn how to use a writing checklist to edit our stories.

Writing & Celebrating
We will work on writing and editing our stories to make them better. We will have an author celebration on the last class where each student will read one of their stories they created during class.
