Description
Class Experience
Students will learn how to identify a problem and create a solution. Students will learn the five steps of the engineering design process: 1. Ask: What is the problem or question? 2. Imagine: What are some solutions? 3. Plan: Draw a couple of different diagrams 4. Create: Choose a plan and create something 5. Test: Did it solve your problem or question? 6. Improve: Make updates and changes 7. Share: Share your work
I have been teaching and guiding students through the Engineering and Design process for many years. I am always intrigued to watch as students plan and create to solve problems.
Class Materials: Provided by teacher: Activity sheets - needs to be printed for class Provided by student: paper and pencil, materials for engineering project-For example: scissors, glue, tape, string, yarn, Popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, paper, clay/play-dough, cardboard, straws, rubber bands, etc. I suggest finding recyclable or reusable materials that you already have for the projects.
During every class, I will observe each student's thoughts and ideas during discussions to see if they demonstrate understanding. I will also be observing their understanding of the engineering design process. I will be looking to see how they followed the steps and incorporated them into their project.
2 hours 15 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
If your learner chooses, they may need/use scissors during the creating/building time.
