US Grade 4 - 5
In this class, students will practice reading and writing skills while having fun and being creative! Each month will focus on a different genre. Learners will learn how to read, write, discuss, and comprehend each genre with engaging texts and activities (games, slides, clips). Reading: Learners will ask and answer questions before, during, and after reading to create meaning from the texts. Fluency will be built by reading aloud and to ourselves. Writing: Students will learn how to write well structured paragraphs. They will also create writings in multiple genres including fiction (stories and poems) and non-fiction (persuasive articles, expository essays, and letters). Grammar: We will also review how to write complete sentences (parts of a sentence) and how to expand sentences (prepositional phrases, compound/complex sentence creation). Punctuation and spelling will be taught during this section. Listening/Speaking (receiving and sending a clear message): Learners will share their writing creations with classmates and explain how their piece meets the demands of the genre. While in the audience, learners will record questions to ask and give encouraging feedback. Content will be presented in a clear way and will involve activities to help students enjoy what they are learning. Classes are interactive and will include a writing time for students to practice what we have learned in class. This class is designed for students who would like some extra practice and review in their Language Arts skills, but any student is welcome! It is an ongoing class that will focus on a different genre each month! I can't wait to meet your students and help them learn to love reading and writing! Teacher expertise and credentials
Texas Teaching Certificate in English/Language Arts
This is my 11th year teaching middle school reading and language arts. I am also a certified reading specialist.
As a teacher and a mom, I see daily how much guidance children need to read, write, and communicate effectively. I work with small groups at least twice per class period in my classroom and have seen great gains in students by using best practices and the gradual release model (I, we, you).
