"Wringer" is a powerful story about a boy learning how to stand up for what he believes in, all while experiencing challenges along the way. This is the story of a 9-year-old boy growing up in a city that has a disturbing rite of passage for boys after they turn 10. Students will learn about peer pressure and its influences, and learn how to apply the situations in the story to their lives. They will learn how literature can inspire them to better understand themselves and others. They will learn that an English class can be fun and engaging. They will learn that their feelings are okay.
I've been a certified teacher for 30 years and have addressed significant development and life issues during this time, all handled with sensitivity, understanding, and respect. I have facilitated the reading of this book to a group of students on multiple occasions so am experienced in helping students process its themes.
