“The Great Gilly Hopkins” is a novel by Katherine Paterson, which tells the story of eleven-year-old Galadriel “Gilly” Hopkins in the foster care system. Gilly prides herself on being a rambunctious and difficult child. As the story begins, Gilly comes to live in a foster home in Maryland overseen by Mrs. Trotter and lived in by William Earnest Teague, a neuro-diverse seven-year-old. I've been a certified teacher for over 30 years and have addressed significant development and life issues during this time, all handled with sensitivity, understanding, and respect. I have facilitated the reading of many books to groups of students so am experienced in helping students process their themes.
4 hours 35 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Parents should be aware that the book has sometimes banned because Gilly swears, taking "God's name in vain."
