"Maniac Magee" is the story about a boy who becomes a local legend for feats of athletic prowess and who accepts everyone he meets at face value. The writing is engaging to elementary school students and often funny, even silly. Still, through his gifted storytelling style, the author gently and skillfully introduces young readers to the themes of homelessness, racism, and inequality. Students will learn about homelessness, racism, and inequality, and learn how to apply the situations in the story to their lives. They will learn how literature can inspire them to better understand themselves and others. They will learn that an English class can be fun and engaging.
I've been a certified teacher for over 30 years and have addressed significant development and life issues during this time, all handled with sensitivity, understanding, and respect. I have facilitated the reading of this book to a group of students on multiple occasions so am experienced in helping students process its themes.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
The themes of the story might be considered by some to be mature but they are presented appropriately for a younger audience. The main character's parents have died and he lives as an orphan, often moving from place to place without apparent adult supervision.
