Summer Camp: Middle School (6-8Th Grade) Reading, Comprehension, and Writing

Is your child struggling with reading and writing? This four week summer school camp will cover many middle school reading standards, working through comprehension in reading and passages. It will also cover writing structure for essays.

Homework
1 hour per week. Students will be provided games for additional practice and access to the online, game-like platform: Raz-Plus to listen and read as often as they would like!
Progress Report
Students will receive feedback every 2 weeks on the English progress throughout the course.

This is a reading curriculum course taught by a certified teacher and Reading Specialist using the Science of Teaching Reading principles.  

This class is different from others because it follows a curriculum and is academically focused while being engaging and motivating for all learners.  The curriculum is cross-curricular so science and social studies topics be also be covered.

Small class sizes ensure that your child gets the one on one instruction your child needs, child will learn to read guaranteed!  Get your child ready for school!


READING COMPREHENSION:
     Draw inferences from the text.
     Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem 
     Summarize the text.
     Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story
     Determine the meaning of words and phrases used in a text
     Explain major differences between poems and drama 
     Compare and contrast two stories
     Make connections between the text of a story or drama
     Compare and contrast themes and topics of text
     
WRITING
     Write opinion pieces 
     Introduce a topic or text clearly, state an opinion, and create structure
     Provide reasons that are supported by facts and details
     Write informative/explanatory texts 
     Develop the topic with facts, definitions, and concrete details
     Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences
     Use dialogue and description to develop experiences and events

Important Notes for Class:
We will have one brain break per class.
Some students might need small group/1:1 intervention to be successful in this course (Small group/1:1 tutoring will be offered on Fridays as needed) 
The syllabus may be adjusted as needed to support learner's needs and growth

Learning Needs
All learner types will be valued and instruction will be tailored to meet the student's needs and learning goals.
Parental Guidance
This course will use CommonLit. The curriculum is used for middle and high school students. No subscriptions are required. These tools will we used in our online lessons during class with minimal downloading/printing.
Pre-Requisites
Learners need to know the foundations of reading, comprehension writing, phonics, and grammar. My reading assessment class is a recommend prerequisite to determine which class would fit the needs of your child best.
