Description

Class Experience

By the end of our session, students will have a new knowledge of different types of dance steps used in traditional musical theater choreography, as well as how to piece together different portions of a combination. They will also develop their confidence in performing in front of others and using their body in a new athletic way. The final task of adding character or specific emotions to the dance helps them to give life to their movement and focus more on the storytelling than on getting every move perfect. This is a unique class in that they will also learn about four major moments in history and how so many events in the past are connected together. They might also learn a new song!
As a baby, preschool, and elementary theatre and music teacher, I have worked with students ages 5 months to 12 years in this format. I believe that moving our bodies is a great way to keep kids active and discover new ways to be creative, while challenging them to remember specific movements in a piece of music keeps their brains sharp. I'm so eager to bring this particular class option to students as it keeps us moving during these unusual times, and lets them develop a relationship with other students all over the world over eight weeks. This is a unique class in that students have the chance to perform Broadway style dance combinations from their living rooms eight weeks in a row!
Students should be in a space where they have room to move (seated with headphones is not advisable for this class!). Students should also wear sensible footwear (no open toe shoes or heels). Barefoot or socked feet are welcome! Please also have water, juice, lemonade, or some type of liquid nearby to stay hydrated throughout class (soda would not be the best choice to stay hydrated!).

The following is OPTIONAL: If the student chooses, they may have costume pieces that are in the style of the show to put on for our final performance in the last five minutes of class.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
4 hours per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Some songs from these musicals feature suggestive language and/or profanity. We will avoid these songs in class or use a clean version, but if students chose to listen to the soundtracks outside of class please be aware!
