We don’t talk about Bruno, but we DO talk about how much we love Encanto! In this five day camp, students will get moving to five different songs from the movie Encanto! Come with some dance experience or none at all; this camp is designed to get you dancing AND have fun! We will begin each class with a brief check in to see what kind of energy everyone is bringing with them, then a brief warm up to wake up our bodies and feel out the space, and then move on to learning a beginner dance combination set to about a minute of a song from the movie. Dance steps may include jazz squares, kick ball changes, windmill arms, pivots, step touches, grapevines, and many more. We will take a short break at the halfway point of each class to hydrate and take a restroom break, as well as have discussions about the movie (why certain characters made certain decisions, who is the best character, etc.) In the last few minutes of each class, we will have a final performance of the dance of the day (anyone at home is welcome to watch if the student wishes!). Students can also have an Encanto style costume accessible for our final performance! At the end of each class students will also share one word or sound to describe how they felt about their performance. On the last day of class, we will have our typical final performance and then a share where each student will show which dance move was their favorite to learn and do, and one thing they were proud they did during our time together. *Please note that we dance to a small portion of one song, not in a formal concert or performance format, using my own choreography not featured in the movies. We never do all of the songs within one class, only one each class, and never in the context of the show or using the technical elements related to Encanto.
Learning Goals
By the end of our session, students will have a new knowledge of different types of dance steps used in traditional musical theater choreography, as well as how to piece together different portions of a combination. They will also develop their confidence in performing in front of others and using their body in a new athletic way. The final task of adding character or specific emotions to the dance helps them to give life to their movement and focus more on the storytelling than on getting every move perfect. Our discussion/debate period allows students to also communicate with others in their age group and become part of a community across the world. They might also learn a new song!

Teacher expertise and credentials
As a baby, preschool, and elementary theatre and music teacher, I have worked with students ages 5 months to 12 years in this format. I believe that moving our bodies is a great way to keep kids active and discover new ways to be creative, while challenging them to remember specific movements in a piece of music keeps their brains sharp. I'm so eager to bring this particular class option to students as it keeps us moving during these unusual times, and lets them develop a relationship with other students all over the world over eight weeks. This is a unique class in that students have the chance to perform Broadway style dance combinations from their living rooms eight weeks in a row!
