Class experience

US Grade 2 - 4
Beginner Level
This class is taught in English.
Students will improve their spelling, punctuation, grammar and writing confidence. They will learn basic punctuation, and parts of speech - nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, and adverbs. They will learn how to write an interesting paragraph.
I have been a teacher for over twenty years and I currently run two after-school writing programs for elementary schools in the Los Angeles School District and the Culver City School District. One of these schools has 80% ESL learners. I have many years of experience teaching ESL. I taught ESL in Seoul, Korea, and I taught ESL in Los Angeles at a university in Koreatown and at one of the top ESL schools in Los Angeles, Kaplan, for five years. I'm also a published novelist and I regularly teach writing to schools around the country. I have noticed that many kids need more writing help, partially due to the pandemic, so I'm excited to help as many kids as possible to feel confident about their writing. I think this will have a huge impact on them going forward.
Homework Offered
If they struggle with spelling, I would love them to download a phonics app of your choosing and do it a few times a week. If they would like to write in a journal, they can write about what they did each day. Or they can continue the story they wrote in class.
0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
No letter grade, the only goal is to make sure they practice writing so that they get better. The best way to do this is a lot of positive feedback. The emphasis will be on basic writing skills and basic spelling and grammar.
Grades Offered
A notebook, a sharpened pencil, markers.
Every class, there will be a common household item to bring to the class. You'll see this in the email to the class. Above, you will also see this listed in the lessons section.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
I will use Canva to help students learn.
