Class Experience

Establishing a Universal Action Plan for the Zombie Pandemic Model UN Summit! The term of Zombie describes a mysterious pandemic - like COVID-19 - that our class will build action plans, and debate in a mock congress or Model UN fashion. This lesson examines pandemics of the past (in a historical viewpoint), and as a group we are building action plans to solve the pandemic learning from history.

Overview: For this course, students will form teams, adopt a World History Civilization, and take on the role of United Nations advisors for that civilization, culture, and/or nation. There will be some leeway as to which countries you can choose, but we will have representatives from industrial developed countries, developing counries, and underdeveloped countries. During the summit you will debate and vote on resolutions from each civilization and/or culture group from World History.

Specific Plagues in Questions: The Plague of Justinian (541), The Black Death (1347), The Italian Plague (1629-31), The Great Plague of London (1665-1666), The Great Plague of Marseille (1720), The Third Plague of Pandemic (1855), Mexico Smallpox (1519) and Massachusetts (1633), Yellow Fever Philadelphia (1793), China Modern Plague-includes India and Hong Kong (1860s), Manchuria (1910), SARS (2003), H1N1 (2009), Ebola West Africa (2014), Zika (2016).

Civilizations, Nation/Country, Culture Group, and/or Place: Italy-Florence City State (Ground Zero for Europe) 1348, England and the town of Eyam 1665 (plague), The Plague of Justinian (Constantinople) in 541, China Modern Plague (includes India and Hong Kong) 1860s, Ebola West Africa 2014, World War One Influenza, Dr. Snow and the Broad Street Pump 1854.

In our courses we will examine the history of plagues and sickness from civilizations throughout history. Using the seminar method we will connect historical themes to examine current events. From our research we will examine a situation that creates a Zombie plague and/or pandemic. Students will create position papers and create resolutions to solve the situation using the lessons from history. The final lesson will be a Student Congress/Model UN presenting resolutions and formal debate to determine which policy we adopt.

Lesson One: Introduction into the concepts of civilization, conditions for sickness and disease, and historical pandemics.

Lesson Two: Examine the major pandemics from history to compare and contrast. Create groups to become nations. Examine the assignment and activity. Action paper to fix the pandemic.

Lesson Three: Work with each group as they create a nation, culture, and country to be part of the Model UN. Work with groups on actions papers and policy creation. Examine methods to problem solving especially with pandemics. Compare to current events.

Lesson Four: Work on the polishing of action papers and the creation of the different nations created by the learners. Introduce the congress and the parliamentary process. "Robert's Rule of Order." Check in with each group to make sure they are making progress and close to final drafts.

Lesson Five: Continue the Model UN Congress and Parliament with debating, discussing, and creating policy together. Finish our session and have a seminar on what we learned.

Learning Goals

Students will gain insight into group research, writing a position paper, public speaking, debating, understanding Pandemics in World History, and government process (Robert's Rule to Order). Students will also gain an understanding of Model UN in a creative way. The term of Zombie describes a mysterious pandemic - like COVID-19 - this topic is not violent. We are using the pandemic of history in order for students in their groups to create action plans to solve the pandemic (not repeat history) and learn debate, congress, and public speaking skills in a Model UN format.

I have 16 years as an educator and five as an educational leader. The majority of my teaching experience has been in the history, government, and social studies. I have performed this lesson as a final in several of my classes. This lesson was used in my seminar (honors) world history and world literature class. We examine the history of pandemics and how different civilizations attempted to solve the pandemic. We will be able to use some current events and be extremely sensitive as the COVID-19 has impacted many of us.
