Class Experience

Over the course of two days in one week (generally Monday and Thursday), students will brainstorm, draft, revise, and polish a five-paragraph essay with a three-pronged thesis. Each submitted essay will receive a full instructor evaluation.

Any level of essay experience is welcome, but students should be familiar with the format of body paragraphs and the composition of a thesis. Each student will complete one expository (information-giving) essay on a topic of their choice (anything from video games to nuclear power to Michelangelo is welcome!), and will receive a detailed evaluation from the teacher. Essays will be assessed on a 1-2-3 level, with 3 as the most advanced. In the evaluation, students will be able to clearly see strengths and weaknesses as well as how to improve their writing.

One unique aspect of this class is that students will be challenged stylistically to add certain literary and grammatical elements to their essays.

Students are welcome to take this class more than once.

Day 1: We will briefly review the organization of an essay, play a Thesis Throwdown game, and choose our essay topics. Students will be guided through the stages of brainstorming and graphic organizing. The homework will be to compose all three body paragraphs and bring them to the next class.

Day 2: After revising the body paragraphs for structure, grammar, and style, students will write the introduction and conclusion for their essays.

Along the way, the instructor will supply printable materials to aid in the construction, polishing, and evaluation of the essays.

This class is different than The Five-Paragraph Expository Essay, although it will be similar in structure. Students who have completed the latter will be perfect candidates for this class.

Bachelor's Degree from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
My passion -- as well as my professional background -- is writing. Professionally, I hold a B.A. in Journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and I've been published in numerous newspapers and magazines. I've also taught writing and literature classes to students of all ages and abilities.

On a personal note, I have homeschooled all five of my children and taught them all to read and write... and with each, it has been a different experience! What's easy for one child is not easy for another. When I teach online, I always remember that it's important to keep learning fun and to incorporate different methods of teaching to reach all my students.
