This is a five-session project-based course where students will present their art projects on the last day. We will learn the Art of Microbiology by learning to use and view different images under a microscope from an artist's viewpoint.

Class experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Day 1 How to use a microscope and make a slide. Understand the difference between a depression slide and a regular slide.
Students will look at the letter "e", and cheek cells. After viewing them, they will sketch and recreate them through an art form using sketch pad, pencil, scissors, a magazine, colored paper, scissors and glue stick. Students will learn what is Abstract Art and learn the Collage technique.
Day 2 The wonderful view of Protist life. Students will look at pond water images. After viewing them, they will recreate them through an art form. Students will learn what is Soft Sculpture. If they have pipe cleaners, cotton balls, glue stick, assorted pompoms, cardboard (old cereal box will work) and markers. They are welcomed to work alongside the instructor to create their own Soft Sculpture.
Day 3 Students will view images of various worms and insects. After viewing them, they will recreate them through an art form. Students will learn what is a Color Wheel and how to use complementary colors to depict images they just observed.
Day 4 Students will view images of different parts of our bodies. After viewing them, they will recreate them through an art form. Students will learn how to use fabric or latex paint to recreate what they have observed. If the have paints, they are welcome to work along with the instructor. Students will view what is Pour Painting to form different patterns.
Day 5 Art Gallery Day is when all the students will show their project that they created after viewing many microscopic images. We will also review all that we learned throughout the week and take a virtual tour of a museum if time allows.
I am an Art minor with a major in Biology. I love both. I have taught both subjects over a period of thirty-five years. It is my joy to bring this to the online community.
Homework Offered
Students will concentrate on two art projects for Friday. They will present them on Gallery day in our last class.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Their understanding of the microscopic organisms will be assessed with an oral exam. Art is assessed by the student's creative ability to present it using different media of their choice. They must know what it is from a scientific point of view and explain why they chose to artistically express it with the mediums they chose.
Grades Offered
Students should have various art media. The minimum would be assorted paper (scrapbook paper), cardboard (cereal boxes), color pencils, markers, and watercolor paints. Extras could be fabric paint, pipe cleaners, cotton balls, chalk, yarn, beads, playdoh, etc.
