Class Experience

Summer Camp: Arabic for Beginners 1 will meet 4 times a week for two weeks. The lessons of each week will alternate between building knowledge of the Arabic alphabet and building conversational skills. By the end of the 2-week camp, the student will be able to use the alphabet to read phrases and expressions we have learned. This camp contains the same content as my Arabic for Beginners 1 class, but in a condensed summer camp schedule.

WEEK 1:
Lesson 1 - Introduction to the alphabet
Lesson 2 - Introductions: The student will learn how to introduce herself and ask others for their names and where they are from. Also, the learner will start to learn about Arabic pronouns.
Lesson 3 - Review of the alphabet and begin writing letters.
Lesson 4- Introduction of basic vocabulary and exploring ways to ask about other objects. We will also introduce numbers from zero to 10.

WEEK 2:
Lesson 1 - In this lesson, students will have the opportunity to practice what they learned about the alphabet so far, before being introduced to the second group of letters (letters that can always be connected to one another.)
Lesson 2 - The learner will be introduced to basic adjectives, including colors.
Lesson 3 - More letters and vocabulary will be introduced in this lesson. We will make use of what we have learned so far to try read and write most of the words that we have used in previous lessons.
Lesson 4 - Students will learn how to express possession and use that in combination with the nouns, colors, and adjectives we have learned in the previous lessons.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in English from San Francisco State University, MA in Linguistics
My entire career has focused on teaching languages and encouraging cross-cultural interaction and learning. After obtaining my undergraduate degree in English, I joined an acclaimed cultural center in Morocco, where I was trained to teach Arabic and facilitate multicultural dialogue. I taught Modern Standard Arabic and Darija (Moroccan Arabic) to students from all over the world.

After moving to California, I continued working as a teacher of languages. I taught Arabic, French, and English as a foreign language for various institutions, including Berlitz, ABC Languages, and Fresno State University. In 2013, I received my Masters in English (with a focus on linguistics) from San Francisco State University. I have been teaching Arabic on Outschool for more than 5 years.

When learning a new language, it's best to use that language as much as possible. While speaking some English may be necessary at first, it should be minimized as learning progresses. As much as possible, I choose to engage my students in Arabic and elicit responses in Arabic as well.

The most efficient way to learn a language is to focus on conversation. In my classes, I always prioritize speaking to help the learner overcome any initial feeling of intimidation. Everybody has a different learning style. As a teacher, I adapt my teaching style to the needs and learning styles of each individual student.

When I'm not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my wife and two young sons. I'm excited to raise my children in a multilingual and multicultural environment. With that goal in mind, our family spent 2019 traveling and homeschooling - we visited Germany, Austria, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, and Albania. It was fascinating!

Over the last four years, I've had the pleasure of teaching students of many backgrounds from over two dozen countries. I teach all levels, from absolute beginners to advanced student of Modern Standard Arabic. Feel free to contact me - I'm excited to help you find the perfect course for your learner!
