Beginner - Advanced Level
This class focuses on Molly of Denali, a PBS Kids show about Native Alaskans and their culture. Students will learn more about Alaska. A map of Alaska will be provided for students to label and color. Children will share what their favorite episodes are or favorite books about Molly. Each session will end with time for students to ask questions about Alaska and the Indigenous people who live here. Week 1: Where is the village of Qyah? What are the geographic features of the area? Week 2: How tall is Denali? Where did it get its name? Week 3: Who are Molly's friends? What are their favorite activities? Week 4: What type of animals live in the region around Denali? Week 5: Learn about Athabascan cultural activities. Week 6: Learn more about Athabascan values. Week 7: What type of plants and trees grow in the Interior region of Alaska? Week 8: How many Native Languages are there in Alaska? Week 9: Learn about the ecosystems of Alaska. Week 10: Explore animal habitats of moose, wolves, caribou and beavers in Alaska. On-going class topics will cycle through these topics with information from new episodes.
Learning Goals
- Learners will participate in a discussion about Native cultures in Alaska.
- Learners will be able to color a map of Alaska and label 4 cities and towns in the map.
- Learners will be able to say two new things they learned about Alaska.
- Learners will be able to describe the habitats and ecosystems of wild animals in Alaska.
