What's included

4 live meetings
3 hrs 40 mins in-class hours
Homework
1-2 hours per week. Your student will have homework each night to read the book. Homework should last 30 minutes maximum. They can read it independently, with a grown up, or listen to the audio recording (it's on YouTube!) If they fail to read, unfortunately, they'll be lost in the next class. There will also be an optional Kahoot over the chapters.
Assessment
Informal, fun Kahoots will be offered each day in class (dependent on if we have time to complete it after reading.) Also, Homework Kahoots will be provided for students to work on after they complete their homework chapters. Homework Kahoots are optional! If we are unable to get to the Lesson Kahoot due to time restrictions, I will provide them for optional homework as well.

Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Did you know, students in grades 3-5 lose about 20% of gains over the summer? This can be prevented by daily reading.

In this club, we will read aloud this Newberry Award winning novel, "The One and Only Ivan." Students will listen to it being read aloud, although we will also have the opportunity for round robin reading, if your student would like to volunteer to read. After we finish our reading for the day, we will discuss characters and plot, make predictions, and more. If there is time, we will complete a Kahoot over the chapters as a fun wrap-up to the lesson.

Your student will have homework each night to read the book. Homework should last 30 minutes maximum. There will also be an optional Kahoot over the chapters read for homework.

Once we finish the book (class 3), we will discuss the overall plot, theme, and characters.

Students should watch the movie between Class 3 and Class 4. During Class 4 we will discuss the movie and compare it to the novel. We will also discuss the real life gorilla, Ivan, who inspired the book.

Learning Goals

My goal is to foster a love for reading in each student. However, along the way, we'll also improve reading fluency skills, comprehension, making predictions, inferencing, and more through discussion.

Learning Needs
All children are welcome and all children can learn in this class!
Parental Guidance
No scary or violent content, although the book does elude to animal abuse in a circus (nothing graphic at all is mentioned.) Please check Common Sense Media before signing your student up for this course if you are concerned. As one comment on CSM says, "The book is sad in places and it exposes some troubling and even horrific human behavior. But the main character is dynamic, loyal, compassionate, and heroic despite the pain and loneliness he has faced, and the lessons the book teaches are timeless and invaluable."
Supply List
"The One and Only Ivan" novel by Katherine Applegate is available on Amazon for $4-8.
