Description

Class Experience

To read and be read to strengthens our ability to comprehend and hold onto what we learn. Reading good books also opens our eyes to a larger world than the small world we each live in.
Discussion can be intense and deep as we dive into issues and personalities in the book. As we discuss, I hope students will learn to see others and themselves differently with less judgement. Studying characters from good books gives us insight into our own lives, helps us see flaws in our character that others may struggle with, can bring up ideas in our mind for change in our life and help us see vast differences among the people through our lives that we may not have been aware of. Recognizing those differences help us enjoy the many different people we will confront and become apart of through our lives.
I've taught ages 3-22 in school settings for more than 30 years and enjoy helping students see their struggles and strengths as well as those around them and teaching them to support each other despite our differences.
I've worked with students who need a bit of extra help and students with specialty needs. (We all have specialty needs when you think about it!!) I've learned to love the diversity we all bring to a classroom, teaching each other skills within our individual talents and abilities we can share with each other! This book and it's life's lessons has become one of my favorites to share, discuss and learn from!
Students will need to read what we do not finish reading before the next class and jot down some ideas and insight they have on class given questions. Staying caught up with the reading, and reading through the upcoming questions will help them be ready to discuss in class.
You will need to acquire the book "Fish In A Tree" by Lynda Mullaly Hunt before class begins. Amazon has it in stock.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
NA
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
Some students may need assistance in reading what is not finished in class and/or completing the book report. There is a 4 student minimum in this class. Please share the class with others! If the minimum number is not met within 48 hours of the class, the class will either a) pushed back to start at a later date or b) be canceled.
Discussion of book clubs is much richer with an adequate class size.
