This seven-week course builds upon material from Part Nine of the Summa Cum Laude series. Learners can expect more Latin grammar and translation, as well as more Roman history and culture.

We will continue our work with Latin composition, focusing primarily on incorporating more complex grammatical concepts (subjunctives and subjunctive clauses, gerunds/gerundives, participles, ablative absolutes, etc.)

Latin Composition: Short Stories, Big Ideas (Part One)

We continue our work with incorporating more advanced concepts into our Latin composition. These exercises are intended to help learners to develop stronger grammatical skills, but also to strengthen their instincts and intuitions around the language.

Latin Composition: Short Stories, Big Ideas (Part Two)

This gives us the opportunity to have a bit of playful fun while still strengthening grammar and composition skills. Learners will use their own self-created stories to create a mad lib for others. 

Latin Composition: Latin Mad Libs

While Latin is a very structured and orderly language (reflecting the culture of the people who spoke it!), it does still have some quirks. Learners have already encountered some of these (irregular and defective verbs, nouns that only come in a certain number, etc.), but we will explore some of the others (ellipsis with passive verbs, syncopation, etc.).

The Mystery Spot: Peculiarities and Curiosities in the Latin Language

We'll explore the differences in Latin poetry versus Latin prose. Poetry had meter, and its structure was more freeform. Why? How was prose arranged in contrast?

How did people correspond with one another in the classical world? What was the structure of their letters like? How did they address one another? What endearments might they use? How were their letters different than our modern day correspondence?
